Bio data & Academics

 Paolo Tenti was born in Bolzano, Italy, in 1951. He received a degree with honors in Electrical Engineering from the University of Padova, Italy, in 1975.

 In 1979 he became a contract professor of Power Electronics, in 1981 a permanent researcher, and an associate professor in 1985. In 1990 he became full professor of Power Electronics at the University of Catania, Italy, and since 1991 he has been professor of Electronics at the University of Padova.

From 2001 to 2008 he served as Director of the Department of Information Engineering and, from 2003 to 2008, as Chairman of the Council of Department Directors of the University of Padova.

Paolo Tenti is a Fellow of the IEEE and senior member of the Italian Association of Electric and Electronic Engineers.

Research interests

The main research interests are in industrial electronics, static power conversion, and electromagnetic compatibility. In these areas Paolo Tenti holds some patents and published more several technical papers and some textbooks. In particular, several contributions have been dedicated to the application of modern control theories (optimum control, multi-variable hysteresis control, time-sharing control, sliding mode control, fuzzy control) to power electronics equipment for industrial and space/avionics applications.

More specifically, Paolo Tenti has been active in the fields of:

  • Static power supplies for nuclear fusion experiments and particle accelerators
  • Propagation of electromagnetic fields in multilayer structures
  • Optimum control of PWM converter systems
  • Direct and quasi-direct ac/ac conversion
  • Current control of voltage-fed PWM inverters
  • Power factor correctors, PWM rectifiers and active power filters
  • Resonant converters for high-frequency applications
  • Soft-switching techniques applied to high-power high-frequency converters
  • Application of modern control techniques (sliding-mode control, fuzzy control, vector control, distributed control) to PWM converters

Currently, he is mainly involved with:

  • electromagnetic compatibility in industrial equipment
  • digital control of switched-mode power supplies
  • power quality issues and compensation techniques in electrical networks under non-sinusoidal conditions
  • cooperative control of power electronic converters in smart grids

 Paolo Tenti holds the following International patents under their terms of validity:

  • "High dynamic performance dc/dc converter system with time-share control" (Europe: 90103192.2, USA:  485,018).
  • “Device for controlling heating element power” (U.S. 5,646,460)
  • “Drive mechanism and method for opening/closing of electric switchgear” (EU 05106394.9)

 He was responsible of several research programs, funded by National or International Public Institutions (Ministry of Research and University, European Space Agency, National Research Council, National Agency for Alternative Energies, etc.) and private companies.
